The Birdman of Devil’s Creek

Directions:

Overview:

For thousands of years, reports of winged beasts have emerged from every culture on every continent. One such report hails from Devil’s Creek Road near Whitley County, Kentucky, where tales of a ghastly beast with enormous wings and bulbous, blood-red eyes have proliferated for generations.

This demon-like figure, which is known throughout the region as the Birdman of Devil’s Creek, is often seen near Ridener Cemetery. This secluded burial ground sits just a stone’s throw from both Devil’s Creek and Dogslaughter Creek, the latter of which got its name from the preponderance of hunting dogs that have gone missing in the area—victims, no doubt, of predatory wildlife.

The journey to Ridener Cemetery is not for the faint of heart. Many of the roads in the Daniel Boone National Forest are unpaved and poorly marked, and they are often beset by bone-rattling corrugation and downed tree limbs.
