Marymount Hospital

Overview:

In May of 1970, an Owsley County man named Donald Harvey, who would later be known as the Angel of Death, was hired as an orderly at Marymount Hospital in London, Kentucky. Over the course of the next ten months, Harvey would murder at least nine patients at the hospital, the first in a series of murders that would come to be recognized as one of the most heinous killing sprees in American history.

It would take nearly two decades, until March of 1987, before Harvey was finally arrested for his crimes. Shortly after his arrest, and as the crimes of Donald Harvey began making headlines across the region, the men and women of Laurel County started referring to Marymount Hospital as Murdermount Hospital. Indeed, the embattled hospital was never able to escape its association with the Angel of Death, and the building was eventually razed to the ground. Today, the site where Marymount Hospital once stood is now an empty field in Downtown London.
